8 mph Mobility Scooters – “Class 3”

Class 3 Mobility Scooters with an upper speed limit of 8 mph are for both pavement and road use. It is important to remember that it is not legal to drive at over 4 mph when on a pavement. There is normally a switch on a Class 3 Mobility Scooter to limit the speed to 4 mph when being used on a pavement.

8 mph Mobility Scooters are usually larger than 4 mph versions, are fitted with suspension and have a greater mileage range. They also have a higher weight carrying capacity and can tackle more challenging terrain. They come complete with front and rear lights, direction indicators, a horn and a rear view mirror so that they can legally be used on the road.

While there is no legal requirement to have an insurance policy for a Mobility Scooter, we highly recommend that you purchase one in case of accident or injury. There are a number of insurance companies that specialise in insurance policies for mobility vehicles and we can help point you in the right direction.

Road Tax

Class 3, 8 mph Mobility Scooters must be registered with DVLA. However, since the abolition of the vehicle tax disc in October 2014, you do not need to display one, nor do you need a licence plate for your vehicle. To register your Class 3, 8 mph Mobility Vehicle, you need to complete form V55/4 for new vehicles, or V55/5 for used vehicles. You can get the forms from DVLA’s online ordering service.

Send the completed form to: DVLA Swansea, SA99 1BE. (Unfortunately, you can’t license your class 3 vehicle online or at a Post Office.)
